Across China with 'travelling circus'

Daniel Britt and Alex Cho, both of Rothesay, joined the Youth Orchestra of Americas on a recent seven-city tour of China, where they were treated ‘like some crazy rock band’

Daniel Britt said it felt like he was a member of a travelling circus rather than an 80-piece orchestra.

That’s probably because the Youth Orchestra of the Americas, which the Rothesay cellist was asked to join for its 10th anniversary alumni tour over the Christmas break, has musicians representing more than 20 countries in the Western Hemisphere.

Also representing the NBYO were Alex Cho of Rothesay and Amelia Sheils of Dartmouth, N.S.

Their invitation came about after Ken MacLeod, the president of the NBYO, was invited last spring to speak at the Salzburg Global Seminar on the theme of the transformative power of music.
